40 teams participate in the competition:

- all 12 Premier League teams;

- all 8 non-II First Division teams;

- 20 amateur teams.



The 12 Premier League teams enter the competition directly at the 1st Round.

The 8 First Division teams enter the competition directly at the 1st Round.





Knockout stage:

Preliminary Round:

20 teams, 16 of them are drawn into 8 pairs, with the remaining 4 teams receiving a bye into the 2nd Round.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



1st Round:

12 teams from the 1st Round and the 20 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 16 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



2nd Round:

16 teams are drawn into 8 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Quarter-finals:

8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Semi-finals:

4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming FAI Cup winner.

Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

The match is played at a neutral venue.



Qualification for UEFA competitions:

winner: UEFA Europa League

* - if the FAI Cup winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, then no team from the FAI Cup qualifies. The best placed Premier League team, not otherwise qualified for the UEFA Europa League, earns the spot instead.
