The Canucks scored twice in the last three minutes of the third period to force overtime and with the score remaining 3-3 throughout the extra five minutes, a shootout was required with Chicago triumphing 2-1 in the sudden-death finale.

The Blackhawks' Andrew Shaw scored the decisive goal in the shootout, while Chicago goaltender Ray Emery saved Ryan Kesler's attempt to keep the game alive.

Chicago's third consecutive win keeps them eight points clear at the top of the Central Division after the second-placed Nashville Predators also won on Tuesday.

Vancouver scored the only goal of the first period at the United Center in Chicago when Daniel Sedin finished off Dan Hamhuis' good lead-up work.

The Blackhawks blitzed the second period to lead 3-1 heading into the third with Patrick Sharp scoring the equaliser before Marian Hossa struck twice.

But goals to Alexander Edler and Kevin Bieksa in the closing stages of the third period force overtime.

Northeast Division-leaders, the Montreal Canadiens, extended their winning streak to five with a 3-1 triumph away to the New York Rangers.

While the home side made 25 shots to Montreal's 18 at Madison Square Garden, the Canadiens' goaltender Carey Price was kept busy but made 24 saves to maintain his team's winning streak.

After a scoreless first period, New York took the lead in the 13th minute of the second period through Anton Stralman.

Montreal equalised before the final break thanks to Max Pacioretty's goal and then wrapped up the victory when Alex Galchenyuk and Raphael Diaz struck in the third period.

The Canadiens lead the Northeast by three points from the Boston Bruins.

In Nashville, the Predators needed an overtime goal from Shea Weber to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3, while reigning Stanley Cup champions the Los Angeles Kings won their third game in four with a 3-1 triumph away to the Edmonton Oilers.

In other results, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets both kept pressure on Southeast Division-leaders, the Carolina Hurricanes, with wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs (4-2) and the Buffalo Sabres (2-1) respectively, while the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Islanders 3-1 and the San Jose Sharks knocked off the St Louis Blues 2-1.
