The Washington Capitals are one game away from the Stanley Cup after winning game four against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Washington scored three first-period goals on Monday and cruised to a 6-2 win over the Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Capitals now lead the series 3-1.
Washington will have a chance to secure their first ever Stanley Cup championship when the series shifts back to Vegas for game five on Thursday.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS MISS EARLY OPPORTUNITY
The Golden Knights had a chance to strike first. They failed to take advantage of the opportunity.
Vegas left winger Erik Haula sent a pass across ice to James Neal who had a clear shot at a wide open net less than five minutes into play. Neal, however, sent the puck off the far post and the Capitals cleared it out of their zone to keep the score at 0-0.
The Capitals scored just over six minutes later to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights never evened the score.
WASHINGTON TAKE CONTROL IN FIRST PERIOD
The Golden Knights outshot the Capitals 11-10 in the first period. But, Washington headed into the first intermission with a commanding 3-0 lead.
T.J. Oshie tallied the game's first goal on a power play with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first period. Tom Wilson followed with a score five minutes later to put Washington ahead 2-0.
Devante Smith-Pelly added another goal with under 30 seconds to play in the period and the Capitals controlled the game the rest of the way.
KEMPNY ENDS VEGAS' RALLY
The Golden Knights made the game interesting in the final period.
Neal sent a shot over the shoulder of Capitals goalie Braden Holtby and into the corner of the net for Vegas' first goal with 14:17 to play. Reilly Smith followed with a goal of his own seven minutes later to cut the Golden Knights' deficit to 4-2 with just under eight minutes remaining.
But defender Michal Kempny shifted momentum back in the Capitals' favour for good. He received a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and blasted a slapshot past Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to seal the win for Washington.
Brett Connolly added a power play goal for the Capitals with 1:09 left in the game.
