Sweden and Russia survive Group A scares

Group A frontrunners Sweden and Russia were both given scares at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, while Canada were thrashed by Finland on Saturday.

Reigning champions Sweden saw their perfect record ended by Slovakia, but they remain unbeaten after a 4-3 overtime victory.

Rikard Gronborg's men, having won their prior four matches in normal time, required an additional period to get the decisive goal through Mika Zibanejad. Sweden had led 3-1 before letting Slovakia back into the game.

Russia bounced back from their overtime defeat to the Czech Republic, but they also endured a nervy match, edging Switzerland 4-3.

Kirill Kaprizov was the hero for the Russians, netting their first and fourth goals, while Austria beat Belarus 4-0 elsewhere in the pool.

Over in Group B, last year's finalists Canada were stunned as Finland moved to within a point of the United States at the summit with a 5-1 win.

Mikko Rantanen scored twice to keep Finland just ahead of hosts Denmark, who made hard work of a 3-1 defeat of South Korea, as Latvia beat Germany by the same scoreline.
