McDavid inspires Canada drubbing of Norway, Czechs beat Russia

11 maggio 2018 01:03

Captain Connor McDavid scored a hat-trick as Canada hammered Norway 5-0 and the Czech Republic consigned Russia to a first IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship defeat on Thursday.

Last year's silver medallists Canada are back into second in Group B following a clinical victory which leaves Norway down in seventh spot.

McDavid was the star of the show, helping himself to a treble and Bo Horvat struck twice in a one-sided encounter.

The skipper said: "The team played great. We came out and did what we had to do again. We've been getting a lot better as the tournament has gone on. We came out well.

"We understand what this tournament is about. You have to win every game you can; they're all big. You have to take the points where you can get them, and tonight we did that. And now we can go on and focus on Finland."

The Czechs saw off Russia 4-3 in overtime to ensure only defending champions Sweden have a perfect record.

Cam Atkinson was the United States' hero as they also needed overtime to beat Latvia 3-2, while Slovakia were 3-1 winners over France.
